throw
Spear Throw
Throw a spear from behind a line into a hay target 7–8 m away. One attempt. The most failed obstacle in Spartan – it is pure technique, not strength.

Technique
- Untangle the rope first; hold the spear at its balance point, slightly behind the middle.
- Stand side-on, front foot pointing at the target, spear level with the ground.
- Throw like a dart, not a javelin: push straight forward, arm finishes pointing at the target.
- Aim at the centre; the spear should stick with the point slightly down.
- Practise 30 throws a week with a stick or a homemade spear – frequency beats everything.
Common mistakes
- Throwing with an arc (javelin style) – the spear tumbles.
- Stepping on the rope or not checking it is free.
- Rushing the throw straight after the run-in; take two breaths.
Penalty when failed: 30 burpees
